You might remember a while ago I had an idea for a Daring Do adventure story??? Well that idea is currently fleshing itself out, so here goes:
Daring Do & The Elixir Of Strength.
Chapter 1 (my chapters are a bitty short but here we go)
“Hasbro!”
Daring Do cursed as her hooves began to ache, & the bushes caught in her bandages. Mainly due to the fact were it not for said bandages, she’d be able to soar with relative ease above these annoying bushes whose branches & thorns snagged any land-creature passing through them. She remembered reading somewhere about some brave land-creatures, with whom she was sure her kind had often been allied, who had figured out a way to travel through said annoyance without getting snagged, snapping a single thorn or twig, or leaving so much as a wisp of fur behind. If only she had such books on her now, but obviously she travelled light, just in case of things like this. This was the other thing annoying her ie: a rather consistent throbbing of part of her left wing. Daring Do was a pegasus Pony who loved to fly, & hated long hoof-journeys like this. That was what earth Ponies were built for, after all.
“Problem?”
Do whipped her head round at the sound of the strange voice, to be confronted by a camo-green Pony with brown mane & tail, & something mud-coloured painted all over him in weird patterns. She relaxed instantly & replied with a sigh: “I’m not really used to all this Major,” indicating the bushes with her nose.
Major, Pony-In-Command of the Earth Pony Defence (EPD), laughed kindly: “No indeedy! You’re strictly a sky-lady...”
“How very dare you call me a lady!” Do giggled back at the familiar jibe. She & Major went back a long way, so she wasn’t too offended by the slur. After all, teasing like this was how the EPD boosted each other’s morale & eased the stress of facing off the frequent predator attacks against which they defended Equestria. “Anyway, what brings you out here?”
“Preparing a training course for some new hopefuls,” Major explained. “You know the drill.”
Do did. They rustled, they failed. They snagged, they failed. They snapped a twig or lost so much as a wisp of mane, they failed. They took longer than the allotted time, they failed. Many tried for EPD, but few made the cut. Major trained the earth Ponies hard, & with good reason. Ahuizotl wasn’t the only predator out there by a long stretch. Do cursing & snagging her bandage time & again failed her, she knew that much. She indicated said bandage with her nose. “My wing, the left one. I can’t fly with it like this.”
“Again?” This time Major sounded truly concerned. He himself had applied salves to that wing on numerous occasions. He almost swore Do had a map of her pain on that one wing alone. He was also sure it would take a lot more than salve this time. Treating wings was a lot like treating legs. After too much of a battering, neither could carry a Pony without extreme measures.
Do sighed heavily: “I’m afraid so, hence I’m here, looking for Shaman. He’d better have the Elixir.”
“Here’s hoping,” Major agreed heartily. “Wouldn’t want to see you grounded for life now, would we?”
Shaman was Zecora’s cousin, & lived right in the middle of these infernal bushes. Like Zecora, he had natural remedies by the million. Unlike Zecora, his were sourced from all over the world. And the famed Elixir of Strength was not local to Equestria. But Do knew without it, grounded for life was her most likely fate this time. So when Major kindly offered to lead her through the bushes, showing her a good few of the techniques he used to get through such tangled bushes as these, she accepted gratefully, following diligently & learning as she went. After all, the problems posed by these bushes on the ground could just as easily be caused by the trees she often used as cover when airborne. And if the worst came to the worst, she would need these techniques on the actual ground. She still held on to the hope the thoughts of the amazing Elixir gave her, of, if not a fully-healed wing, then at least one which could work hard enough to let her continue flying.
