Hi hi,
I'm QuestisUmami, and I joined the board primarily to keep up-to-date with all the goings-on apropos PonyCon. I'm really pleased that there is a convention for MLP in the UK: everything pony-related should be celebrated in as many places as possible, after all! However, in order to lay all my cards on the table with regards to my intentions, I'm also interested in maybe trading with people in the future (once I've established myself as a worthy candidate and not a whack-job, obvs!)
In terms of my history, I loved, loved LOVED the 80's movie, and enjoyed watching it both as a child and as an adult. In terms of collecting, I have 'toyed' (geddit?) with this a bit; buying pieces from various sources (my first source being Collectormania). My reasons for collecting MLPs are, at present, purely from an artistic/aesthetic point of view: they appeal to my inner jackdaw. I love the colours, the designs on their hindquarters, their hair...However, my reasons may well change: I'll admit, when I did a quick Google search just now, the Wiki page for MLP came up, and the snippet of content listed - with the backgrounds of just a couple of the ponies - really did pique my interest. I like a bit of History, so I'll have to look into theirs when I get a moment!) Recently, the artistry of custom ponies has also caught my eye, and I'd like to go down the route of collecting examples of these too. I was particularly impressed with some of the customs in the photos on the PonyCon site: well done to all those who make customs; I take my hat off to you all! The imagination and innovation involved was amazing - and I was even more excited to discover that some of the examples were for sale too - I hope to get my paws on some one day! (At this point, I guess I should say that, regrettably, I won't be attending this year's convention, but I hope to possibly attend in 2015!) I would also like to take this opportunity to say (not that I think that the organisers are slices of bread that need to be buttered thickly) that I am impressed with the fact that the convention has moved around the UK over the years - I think that this makes for a more accessible and interesting event (and it means that the attendees get to see more of this fine nation than perhaps they would do normally)!
Anyhoo, what else...oh, to wind up my long-winded explanation of my rationale for collecting the toys (I am sooooo sorry about the length of this post: this is the way I am I'm afraid; if there was an award for the longest...well, anything to do with words really, I'd win it hands down, every time! I am INCAPABLE of being concise!) in terms of the generation of pony I prefer to collect, I thought I was a G1 purist, but I have recently been swayed by the charms of some good G3 examples, so I think I like both types really. I've also discovered that I rather like BBP's, and would like to add more of these to my collection (I have one, but it needs to be restored: that's something else I'd like to know more about...) I know of a collection that I am completely in love with; if I could match it, I'd be very happy, but I don't think I'll ever have the money (or the dedication - as terrible as that sounds) to be able to do so.
If you are still with me by this point (and I hope that this post has not been too speech-like and boring), I'm going to finish off by saying that I read molly75's thread for inspiration, and I'm glad that these little masterpieces have brought not just joy, but also comfort, help and hope to so many people. I know that I'm not from Hasbro, and I didn't create the universe they came from, but I just think that the fact that people have really been helped by having them in their lives is a really great thing - and a testament to the power of collecting (molly75, I totally get what you mean about non-collecting friends not being able to understand: I'm not being elitist, but collecting anything is a mindset / a lifestyle which some people are more attuned to than others).
OK, so I'm being thrown off the PC now...time to go! My goal now is to find out more about some of you, and become a regular, helpful part of the life of this board, from here on in!
Toodle pip!
