I really struggled to find food I could eat there and the day after I got home I had one of the worst migraines I had had in ages due to low blood sugar. It took me a week to recover and that hasn't happened in nearly 7 years. ( I usually recover in two to three days now) I found very little to do in terms of exploring and places to visit and the city center lacked decent shops.
One great thing was all the space in the center where I could use my micro scooter.

One reason I like ponycon is that each year we go somewhere different and I get a chance to explore a new part of the UK I have explored some really interesting places over the years but to go to the same place twice seems shame but I am sure you had your reasons and I am also sure that ponycon will be great where ever it is held but I don't know how I will manage the 'special diet' thing this year as well as finding a place to stay that's within my limited price range.

CT I feel your pain, I really do as I have similar issues.

As you may know I have coeliac disease and have to stick to a very strict diet or I end up in hospital. I always assume that no where will cater for my dietry needs so I take plenty of my own snacks and things I can make sandwiches with (I've even been known to smuggle a toaster into a hotel room). I even take my own breakfast things, fruit and so on.

If you have any sort of medical or dietry issue you must plan ahead, way ahead! Talk to the hotel and see if they will cater for your needs in the resurant. Shop around, if you book early enough you can get a deal. Use google to search for places you can have a "safe" meal, or supermarkets that stock your favourite safe foods. In any any doubt take your own packed meals and lunches.

I did take my own food and I had some GF pizza at pizza hut but evidently it wasn't enough. The premier inn I stayed at had no alternative breakfasts and the almond milk went off really quickly. ( couldn't put it in a fridge as the hotel didn't have one)

I like the toaster idea. If I could do that with a mini fridge then I should be OK.

Breakfast is so tricky as it is cereal based, I gave up with hotel breakfast as all I'd end up with is a cup of tea. Instead I will take some fruit of my own and have it with crackers, or just the fruit.

Did the hotel have an ice machine? They usually do. Use the ice bucket in the room and fill it with ice, it will work to chill your milk (this is what I do to chill my milk!) or failing that take several milks and just throw it away after you've used it, it's wastful, but better then drinking sour milk! You can always ask at the hotel bar for an ice bucket filled with ice, you don't have to tell them what it's for

I hate room temperature drinks, so I did the ice thing this year I didn't know if the mercure had an ice machine, so I probably kept tesco and sainsburys going for the time I was there, bu buying ALL THE BAGGED ICE and decanting it into the sink in the bathroom (until I doscovered the plug didn't fit very snugly ) and after that I got a cheap washing up bowl from a poundshop and used that for ice and water instead.

I am absolutely going to get a mini fridge from Argos this time though *nods* I have one of the upgrade rooms boked this time (will need more space as there will be two and a half people in the room!) and if it has no fridge, I am going striaght into the city to get a mini fridge, cos it will be much easier than having to go out at quarter to eleven to get ice before the shops shut! Plus as I won't have to carry it home on the train, there won't be a weight issue with getting it out of the room and onto a train.

But yup, I really can second taking your own food if you have dietary restrictions. My own food issue isn't as bad as you two, but I do always have to make sure I have foodstuff around in case my sugar level drops drastically, I don't want anybody to have to deal with me having a mad flailing hypoglycaemic attack on the floor. Believe me, it can be unpleasant for everyone! I have been known to throw things at people and once I tried to bite my mum when she was attempting to pour sugar into my mouth. Not good!

My problem with food is I'm terribly picky (that and I don't eat at cons....but that's my own fault XD) As I'm sure mlplaura or Reaperfox can tell you, finding somewhere where I'll like the food is really hard XD Luckily for me at least Leicester was perfect as there was a tescos and plenty of fast food places that cater to my really bad diet XD

PKW and Daisy have come up with some really good ideas there with regards to getting food if you have a special diet, but I'd also say, if you are worried about food and your hotel doesn't offer what you need, ask them if they know of somewhere local that does. Most hotel workers have excellent local knowledge
