Well, I was looking through free classifieds ads online, and saw that the Loot newspaper allows you to put a free advertisement on their website for a week, and also features you in their paper for one day. I thought it was worth a try anyway, and put a wanted ad for MLP's in there. I'm not even sure what day the advert was in the paper, but I certainly never got to see it, since I didn't get to a shop that day. Still, if anyone saw the pony ad, it was me.
So I got quite a few emails, but everyone has such inflated price ideas! The first person to write to me said something along the lines of "I have some rare ponies ('82 originals), and I'm looking to sell them as a collection for four hundred pounds". FOUR HUNDRED POUNDS?! Well, I thought, if he sends me pictures of a full set of Mail Orders, a Mimic, a few Greeks and six Munchy's, it might just be worth it, so I asked for a pic on the off chance. The photo comes back, and although it's a bad picture, I can just about see that there are around thirty ponies - three McDonalds G2's, several G2 ponies missing eye jewels, and even a fakie at the back. There are also two Big Brothers, and Pink Dreams the flutter pony in there, I grant, but they're not exactly worth four hundred pounds to my mind! I said I wasn't interested and the price was far too high, but he still wrote back, pestering saying that now he's "giving them away" at 250 pounds. They're worth 10-30 pounds each on e-Bay. Go sell them over there then. Let's see what you actually get!
He's given up on me now, and is currently trying to flog them to some poor money-hunting dealer on Gumtree now if you want to look...
More interestingly, I got this letter from a different lady...
Hi
I saw your ad on Loot saying that you were interested in My Little ponies. I have some items that, according to Miller's Antiques and Collectibles, are very collectible and I believe quite hard to find. Is there anything in particular that you are looking for?
Kind Regards
Well, seems interesting enough until you see the note about the blasted Miller's Collectors Guide! For goodness sake, I own some of the ponies from that book, and I paid nothing like the prices they quoted for those actual examples. Still, I showed an interest and received this message back.
Hi Desiree
All of the items that I have are from the 1980's. I think the first bits I have are from about 1983. I have a lot of single ponies and outfits but some of my larger parts include:
Pony Parlour
Show Stable (it has a crack in the roof but apart from that is fine)
Nursery
Dance School
Stroller (hard to find) which is pushed by a bigger pony
Stroller which is tied to a pony
Castle
I also have some tiny baby ponies in a pram and the ponies that can go in the bath. Most of the bigger items are still in their original boxes as well.
Is there anything that you are looking for from the list above?
Look forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards
OK, so how many of you have experienced something like this? And what's the best way to play her, regarding prices etc.? I am quite interested if some of the stuff is boxed (Always after boxed playsets), but once she quotes a million pounds for them, what do I say? Can you actually haggle online, or won't it work? Let me know your opinions on this. Should I keep pressing for more info, or just say that the prices in the Miller's guide are too high, and if those are the sorts of prices she's charging, I can't possibly afford the stuff?
Oh gosh, I'm so confuzzled!
