Telephone numbers were announced 9am this morning. Please call 0870 2424604 to vote for Black Country Urban Park. All voting closes at 12noon on Mon 10 - so be quick!! Winner will be announced on Wed 12.
I live and work in the Black Country (which includes Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton boroughs) and there is a chance that the Black Country Urban Park project could win £50 million of lottery money - but we need your help!
Starting tonight (Mon 3 Dec), every night this week at 11pm (rubbish scheduling!) there will be a feature on each of the four projects that are in the running for the People's £50 Million lottery money, plus a summary programme on Fri. The money will go to the project with the most votes.
The voting is strict - only one vote per email address and one per telephone number, so we need lots of people to take part (sorry, only UK residents are eligible to vote). You can vote on-line now and by telephone from 9am on Friday. Voting closes on Dec 10. To vote on-line you need to register, then they send an email with a link for you to click on to activate your account, then you have to log in to vote. Please note you also have to open up the link re the Terms & Conditions, just clicking on the box won't allow you to proceed.
The Black Country Urban Park will reopen the amazing mine shafts under the Wren's Nest nature reserve in Dudley - some of the caverns are bigger than a cathedral and there are underground canals too! It is a really amazing space but most of it is not open to the public at present as the mines have to be stablised. The mines are what allowed Britain to be the world leader during the Industrial Revolution - Birmingham is often referred to as 'the workshop of the world' but they are really referring to the Black Country, that is the home of industry. The mines are also geologically important as fossils are abundant and many species are found no where else on the planet. The Urban Park will include development and improvements to the canals around Wolverhampton, and a 'green bridge' between Sandwell and Walsall which is a network of paths and parks for walking and riding, and will incorporate an RSPB site.
The Black Country is an urban area - densely populated with areas of real deprivation and this project will make the most of the green spaces and open them up for locals and tourists alike. This is a really ambitious and worthwile project that will have a major positive impact on the surrounding area and the local economy - more so than any of the other projects I believe (but I may be biased ) So, if you like nature, geology, fossils, canals, walking, riding, the products of Black Country industry (glass, enamels, leather including saddlery, every type of metal work from nails to anchors) and British history, then please vote for the Black Country Urban Park.
To find out more visit the Dudley Council home page www.dudley.gov.uk - all the links to more info on the project and the Big Lottery website and how to vote etc are all there. Please vote for the Black Country and keep your fingers crossed for us.
